Editing Review

We have almost finished editing our video and so far it has been a total success. We had a few difficulties getting our footage onto the computer although we got there in the end and being ahead of time due to having to spend less time filming, we are able to make the most of all of the time we have to edit. So far we have managed to edit the video just as we wanted it to look and we are really pleased with the outcome so far.

Filming Review

We finished filming which was successful, we managed to film the majority of what we need in one day over a course of about 6 hours. We were in luck with the weather which turned out to be a very sunny day making the lighting and colour available for filming just as we'd planned for. We managed to get a lot of nice shots which we were really pleased with and we also managed to get a lot more footage than we thought we would manage in one day which means we are well ahead for editing and further ahead in our timetable than we expected.

Location

We haven't changed all of the locations we will be using in our new video as a lot of the locations we had decided on before were already quite summery and close to nature and this is the effect we want to keep in our new video as the genre is the same.

The Woods

We will use this location for the same reasons as before, it has some pretty scenes close to nature with nice lighting and it is in a nice location.

The Beach

We will use this location as it is a nice area in our local town, close to nature with a really pretty view that looks right over the channel which we can use for some scenes in our montage.

The Marina

We decided to film in the marina because its a modern, pretty area with nice views modern parks to film. Again it is close to nature and pretty like the audience research we found suggested.

Prop Planning

For our video there isn'yt many props neccessary as it isn't a narrative and the most important things we need to focus on is location. Although we do have one prop which is a penny board which we will be using for a lot of our shot as we feel it is a fun, cool feature which fits in well with the genre of the song and our idea.

Costume

We have decided on new costumes to go with our new video ideas and this is what we have decided on.

Frankie's Costume

Rosie's Costume

We decided on these costumes as we feel for an indie/alternative song these outfits are what people of this genre of music would wear. We think that they are quite casual to go with the events in the video and that they really suit the song we have chosen.

The Temper Trap

The Temper Trap is an Australian indie rock band which formed in 2005. The members of the group are Dougy Mandagi (vocals), Jonathon Aherne (bass guitar), Toby Dundas (drums), Lorenzo Sillitto (lead guitar) and Joseph Greer (keyboards and guitar).

The band released their debut album Conditions in 2009 and it got into the top 30 on the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single, "Sweet Disposition".

New Cast Change

Due to being let down by cast with our previous video idea we have decided that as this song doesn't have a narrative structure we will use ourselves as the cast to avoid being let down. Also by using ourselves as cast we can make sure that we act exactly as we should and it will be more effective to organise ourselves rather than other people.

Video Idea

Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap

We have decided to make a music video for Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap as we feel that it is a better song choice for what we are aiming to do. Also the first song we had chosen wasn't possible anymore due to being unfortunately let down by the cast we had chosen and we were unable to find anymore. Now that we have chosen a new song we are able to start from scratch and plan a new video that we hope will work much more effectively.

The song we have chosen we feel needs a fun, summery video so we have chosen to create a montage of summery, bright scenes that will create an upbeat, fun tone to the video that our audience will enjoy. We have chosen to stick with the same genre as before so that we still have the same audience with the same genre conventions and audience research that we can relate to when planning the video.

Video Changes

Unfortunately due to changes in cast and being unable to access a lot of the locations we originally we intended to film from, we have had to make some dramatic changes to our music video. We began to film our original idea but without the cast or locations we intended to use it didn't have the desired effect that we had hoped for it.

Due to these difficulties we have decided to change our song  and plan a new video from scratch. The new song we have chosen is Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap. We feel this song is more appropriate for the locations and cast we have available and will have a more successful outcome.

Cast Change

Unfortunately due to problems with our actors being unable to perform in our music video anymore, we have to make a last minute cast change and change the filming dates. This has led to us being slightly behind in our filming. Our new cast are ourselves, Rosie Potts and Frankie Toft.

Shooting Schedule

We made a shooting schedule in order to plan and organise ourselves and our actors. We've decided to film the majority of our shots on Friday 12th October and Saturday 13th October. We have estimated 15 minutes for each shot starting  from 6am on the Friday until 7.30am. Then on the Saturday we will be filming from 7.45am until 9.30am.

Storyboard

This is the basic plan of our storyboard and what we plan to film in the coming weeks. There may be a few shots changed when it comes to filming but this is the basic plan of what we want to include in the video.

Location

The Woods

One of the main locations we will be filming our music video, due to what we found out in our audience research will be the local woods. We chose this to be one our locations as in our audience research we found that a lot of people said that a place full of nature is what they expected to see in an alternative music video. Also we thought it would be a good place to film a love scene/romantic music video.

Windmill Fields/Golf Course

Another location we chose was the local gold course/fields by the windmill in our local town after what we found out in our audience research. This location will be one of the main ones we film our music video because its in a nature area which is featured a lot in our music video research and also in our audience research. Also it will be a good place to film a romantic music video as it is on the water front and very scenic.

Beach

The next location is the beach by the golf course. This would be a nice place to film a love scene because there is a beach and also a lighthouse near which is quite a romantic scene, it is also again a place with nature like we found in our research.

Battery Point

There is a field behind the outdoor pool next to the water by the lighthouse which we will be using to film a lot of our music video. This will be a good place to film our music video due to the romantic scene and also the attachment to nature so that it fits well with the song, our genre and the romantic storyline.

These locations are chosen to fit the romantic storyline and the results we found from our music video research and our audience research. I think that all of these locations will go well together to create a good scene for the video and create a scenic, romance music video.

Actors

Hannah Smith & Sam Pearson

Hannah Smith

Hannah will be playing the girl in the relationship as she takes drama and will be able to play the part well with the male actor.

Sam Pearson

Sam will be playing the boy in the relationship as he also takes drama and will be able to play the part with the female actor well.

Costume

This is the original costume idea for the couple in our music video to wear. We found in our research that people expected pretty colours to be in an alternative music video so the girl will be wearing a flowery dress or something girly and summery. The boy will be wearing something simple but alternative/indie so that they look like a matching, cool couple.

My Song Choice

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

(insert link)

This is the song we have chosen to make a music video for for our project. This video is about a young couple in love who are experiencing the ups and downs of a relationship but who make effort through the hard times to stay together.

The lyrics to the chorus of the song are as follows:

A moment, a love, a dream, aloud
A kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs

So stay there
Cause i'll be coming over
And while our bloods still young
It's so young it runs
We wont stop till it's over
Won't stop to surrender

This is what we will base the main idea of our video around, using this idea of young love and a rough time to  create a basic storyline that will run alongside the song so that the audience will be involved in the song, making it more appealing to watch. Also the people who answered the questionnaire were all ages 17-20 they will understand the concept and young love and be able to relate to the storyline which is the main aim of the song.

The Artist

The Temper Trap

The Temper Trap are an indie-pop/alternative band formed in 2005, most of their songs are about love and romance and they make a lot of music that people can relate to, another reason we chose this band to make our music video for.

Audience Research Results

For our questionnaire I asked 12 people to fill in the questionnaire about themselves, their ideas of alternative music videos and how frequently they watch music video. These were the results we found:

1. What gender are you?

6 of the 12 people were female and the other 6 people were male.

2. How old are you?

All twelve of the people we asked were from ages 17-20.

3. How often do you watch music videos?

4. Where do you mostly watch music videos?

5. What conventions do you expect to find in an alternative music video?

These were a selection of the most frequent comments answered on this question:
  • Romance
  • Couples
  • Storylines
  • Scenic landscapes
  • Live performances of the artist
  • Pretty colours
  • Nature locations - woods/fields

6. What would you expect to see the band members/artist doing in the video?

These were a selection of the most frequent comments answered on this question:

  • Involved in the storyline
  • Liv performances
  • Love scenes
  • In a scenic area walking etc

What I've found from my Audience Research

For both makes and females aged 17-20, the main mode of watching music videos is television and YouTube where they watch videos mostly once a week or sometimes daily. Their ideas of what an alternative music video should entail often involved love, romance and a lot of songs/videos surrounding the idea of a relationship. This is something I will incorporate into my music video. The people who completed my questionnaire said that they expected to see scenic landscapes, pretty colours and a lot of locations with nature such as lakes, fields, forests etc. I will try to incorporate this into my video so that it is not only what they expect to see in an alternative music video but what they want to see, this will also work well with the theme of romance.

Music Video Analysis

The Drums - Let's Go Surfing

Artist: The Drums
Video Director: David Fishel Kyle Fasanella
Year Released: 2009

There is no real meaning to this video it is just a fun, upbeat, feel-good song made to entertain, it is filmed in one complete shot with no cuts.

Mise-en-scene

This video is set on a beach supposedly next to a pier suggested by the lights to the right of the shot. The brightly coloured jumper is used to make the singer stand out in the darkness of the shot, there is no real focus in the shot other than the band in bright colours and the lights.

The band begins to clap in time on the video as it is played in the song making it seem more synchronous and links the video nicely with the song. The drum in the back of the shot after the cut at 1:43 featuring the band name/logo shows who the band are and also makes the scene quite random, much like the rest of the video, as there is no purpose to the drum being there but it fits the theme of the video.

The two men running after the camera makes the audience feel as if they are part of the video, its almost as if they are moving with the camera due the continuous shot.

Sound

There is no diegetic sound used in this video, there is just the continuous song played throughout with lead singer of the band lip-syncing. The band members in the back of the shot clap along with the music when there is clapping in the song, this makes if feel diegetic however this would have been made synchronous through editing.

Editing

Every time the word 'Surfing' is said in the song it is displayed across the video in large capital letters, this is used to incoperate the song with the video through post-production editing and adds a random theme to the video to fit in with the rest of it.

There is no main editing cuts in this video as it is made up of two continuous shots joint together by a jump cut in the middle.

At the end of the video it fades to black as the camera moves further away from the band and then eventually it becomes more out of focus and fades to black.

Camera Angles

There is only one main continuous long shot all the way up to 1:43 where it cuts to them stood in a different formation but in the same place, so still using the element on continuity and continuously in a long shot.

This was probably shot on the back of a vehicle as a track cannot be used in this shot as it would be seen on the floor, making the viewer feel more part of the video. The shot widens at the end as the characters stop running but the camera continues to move and there are no cuts.#

Mac Miller - Knock Knock

Artist: Mac Miller
Video Director:
Year Released:

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en scene used in this video is all used very well together to create a theme of high school in what looks like the 60s. All of the costume and locations are used to look like suburban streets and school discos so that the theme of the video all links together clearly and creates an overall theme for the video. All of the costume is chosen well to help create the narrative for the video, clearly indicating who is in what group and what happens between them.

The synchronised dancing of all of the people creates a nice tone to the narrative and also makes the video more fun and upbeat.

Sound

The sound in this video is all non-diegetic as it is just the song played over the music video. However the video uses effects to make it look like its diegetic such as the characters making knocking actions as the lyrics 'Knock knock' are played. Other than that there is no key sound used as being a music video, it is all non-diegetic.

Editing

This shot sine quick cuts to create an up-beat tone to the video to fit in with the song. The song uses a lot of black and white shots where it will quickly turn into colour, this effect is used to show an influence from the past and then the present. The tempo of the song isn't really fast however it does have a lot of really

Camera Angles

There is a lot of close ups of Mac Miller's face in this video as certain points of the song, particularly when he says 'knock knock' and when he is emphasising certain lyrics, this emphasises the lyrics used and changes up the camera angles used. There is a lot of panning in and out of Mac Miller as he is surrounded by people, it comes in and out so much that it almost has a fish-eye effect although this is just due to the formation of people around the singer.

Foals - Spanish Sahara

Artist: Foals
Video Director:
Year Released:
The meaning of this video is not about the Spanish Sahara but about a cold place somewhere that would feature in a nightmare. The desolate landscape and the cold scene is like trauma and the man in the song is trying to get through it, then when the trauma doesn't end, it turns into rage.

Mise-en-scene

The opening scene fades in from white to an establishing shot of mountains in black and white, among the mountains you can faintly see a tiny man walking through the snow. The ratio of the mountains the man shows his insignificance in the desolate landscape making him appear t be alone and trapped in the nightmare that the landscape symbolises.

There is a constant repetition of water, ice and snow. All of these things add to the scene to represent the cold, painful trauma that the man is going through. The repetition of these elements all make up the landscape so there is a reoccurring theme throughout the video.

The colours used in this video are all cold, unemotional colours like blue, black, white and grey. These colours are all used to show the desolate landscape which represents the person's trauma as they venture the mountains. The only exception to this is when fire is used later on in the video to show the person's rage that there is no end to their trauma.

When the man in the video is pulling the bags up from the water it represents the baggage he has in his life from the ongoing trauma. He struggles to carry the load and it makes us feel that his anger is building up when he throws himself to the floor, eventually this all amounts to the fire erupting which suggests his fury.

Sound

There is no diegetic sound in this video, only the song by Foals played over the top of the video added with post production editing. Although there are times in the song when there is a close up of the man in the video lip syncing although not accurately as we are not supposed to believe it is him actually singing the song.

Editing

The beginning of the video opens with a fade in from white onto an establishing shot of the mountains, this is a nice opening into the video as it sets the scene. Also through editing the mountains are put in black and white making it look very cold and simple, there's no warmth in the scene.

There's constant cuts between close ups of the mans face to him dragging the bag through the mountains or walking through the snow. This is to show his journey through his trauma and to link it with the emotion in his face, it shows what he's doing and the effect its having on him.

There is a jump cut used in this video to show how much trauma the man is going through in the video but how little distance he is moving in literal terms but also representing the effort it requires for him to move past the trauma.

Camera Angles

There is an establishing shot used at the very beginning of the video, this is used to set the scene and create the initial atmosphere for the rest of the video. The use of an establishing shot to open a video sets the tone and in this video, its a slow white beginning in black and white of mountains; this scene suggests an iry tone and a slightly glum atmosphere.
There is a close up of the man in the video led on his side near the beginning of the video. This shot is used to show the emotion of the man in the video and the fact it shows him led on his side makes it seems like he has given up and is letting the trauma win.

There is a reoccurring shot of the man in the video in a close up of just his face where he is lip syncing to the song. This shot is cut inbetween other shots to show his emotion in reaction to what is shown in the other shots. The use of the close up allowing us to see his emotion means that the viewer is able to feel more involved in the video and more understanding of the man in the scene.

Later on in the video there is a shot of the man in between two posts of fire in a mid-shot, this shot is a big contrast to the rest of the video where it is constantly flicking between either a close up or a wide shot. This contrast in camera angles is to show the change in the man's emotion for dealing with trauma to fury.

History of Music Videos

When were music videos first made?
Music videos began well before the 1980s but this is when they came into prominence by MTV who first began to use the medium to present their music. Prior to the 1980s music videos were knows as "illustrated songs" or a "promotional video".

The first step towards music videos was in 1894 George Thomas and various perforers were hired to promote sales of the song "The Little Lost Child". Using a lantern, George Thomas projected a series of still images on a screen at the same time as live performances. This would soon turn inro the format of music videos that has become so popular.

Who makes music videos?
The directors and producers create the music videos for the artists which is usually funded by their record label.

Who watches music videos?
Young people/teens with access to television and the Internet are the main demographic for music videos although due to the wide variety of artists that make music videos, they target a much wider
audience simultaneously.

Where do people watch music videos?
Most people watch music videos on the television now that there are a wide variety of music channels available on all freeview televisions. Also a lot of music videos are watched more on YouTube due to the rise in Internet availability.

What content do you usually find in music videos?
Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing tool to promote the sale of music recordings. Usually music videos contain the artist of the song and a story to follow/something dramatic that keeps the viewer interested and linked with the song lyrics.
